Football, known as soccer in some countries, is one of the oldest and most popular sports in the world. Its origins can be traced back over 2,000 years to ancient civilizations such as China, Greece, and Rome, where games involving kicking a ball were played.
The modern version of football, however, emerged in England during the 19th century. In 1863, the Football Association (FA) was established in England, formalizing the rules and distinguishing football from rugby. These standardized rules became known as "association football." The sport quickly gained popularity and spread across Europe, South America, and beyond, fueled by industrialization and global trade.
The first international match was played between England and Scotland in 1872, and by the early 20th century, football had become a global phenomenon. In 1930, the inaugural FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay, marking the start of the most prestigious international competition in the sport.
