Motorcycle racing began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, shortly after the invention of the motorcycle itself. The earliest recorded motorcycle race took place in France in 1897, and as motorcycles became faster and more reliable, competitive racing grew in popularity across Europe and the United States. By the 1900s, organized racing events were held on dirt tracks, road courses, and ovals. One of the earliest and most prestigious races, the Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy), was first run in 1907 and remains one of the most challenging motorcycle races in the world.
The 1920s and 1930s saw the rise of Grand Prix motorcycle racing in Europe, with manufacturers like Norton, BMW, and Moto Guzzi dominating the sport. After World War II, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) established the World Championship series in 1949, marking the birth of modern MotoGP racing. In the United States, dirt track racing and flat-track competitions became popular, while events like the Daytona 200 established themselves as iconic fixtures in the motorcycle racing calendar.
Off-road disciplines such as motocross and enduro also emerged during the mid-20th century. Over time, technological advancements revolutionized the sport, with faster, more aerodynamic bikes and improved safety measures. Today, motorcycle racing encompasses a variety of disciplines, including MotoGP, Superbike, motocross, and endurance racing, captivating fans worldwide with its speed, skill, and thrilling competition.
